Section 1.1 Health and Safety - Policy Statement

1. It is J & A (International) Limited's intent, in relation to reference A, to

  • Comply with all legal requirements, conforming to it and promote it to our employee's
  • Continue to improve and develop safe systems of work which are effectively safe and free from risk
  • Prevent/reduce accidents in the workplace
  • Prioritise health, safety and environmental measures which are integrated into the process
  • Review its policies and arrangements on an annual; and if necessary, on an ad-hoc basis following any non-conformances raised
  • Maintain company-wide training strategy by providing internal/external information and training as appropriate
  • Complete and review risk assessments on a regular basis
  • This will be achieved through the support of all staff, the provision of adequate physical and financial resources, promotion of a positive safety culture and communication.

2. J&A will, as far as reasonably practicable, establish and safeguard the health, safety and welfare of its staff, trainees, representatives, contractors, visitors and members of the public affected by our undertaking. In addition, the maintenance and monitoring of the working environment will be undertaken, so to improve the environment and awareness of all concerned with the company.

3. The management representative is the Compliance Manager and is considered a ‘competent person' in the eyes of the legislation. The post holder will be required to keep abreast of all current legislation, extending this to aid the employer fulfil its duties.

4. With assistance of the Compliance Manager, the employer has the following statutory requirements which extends to the provision and maintenance of

  • Safe Plant and Safe Systems of Work, Safety Measures that follow from risk assessment, covering planning, organisation control, monitor and review.
  • Safe handling from storage, maintenance and transport (work) articles and substances.
  • Necessary information, training, instruction and supervision.
  • A safe place of work with safe access and egress, including setting up of emergency procedures.
  • A safe working environment with adequate welfare facilities.
  • The health and safety policy and related documents.

5. Additionally, emphasis is placed in the concept of the legislation being served with complete staff awareness, integrity and commitment in order to achieve continued improvement to standards higher than normally accepted. The management realises that they are responsible for the company's health and safety culture and they too will:

  • Aid in the formulation of procedures for consultation and communication
  • Define areas of responsibility adequately and promote a chain of command in health and safety areas. Safety management demands effective policies and these actions are to be undertaken in conjunction with the QS & SHE Manager and all members of the staff.
  • Improve staff awareness through training, education matters and the provision of a library.
  • Management will be involved in the relevant inspections and on a basis to be decided. Any unsafe acts or conditions will be investigated immediately. This is to include surveillance checks on health.
  • Take advice from the Compliance Manager and Inspectors from HSE, in conjunction with local authorities and external consultants. All aspects will be reviewed as will company and staff performance, in relation to all health and safety matters.
  • The company wishes to promote that safety away from work is also as important as safety at work. To this the company recognises that people are the most critical element to an effective health and safety programme. Employees are to be actively involved as previously detailed and will complement management responsibility used.
  • The company also wishes to maintain and improve its legal, socio-economic and moral obligations, comply with legal frameworks and produce ergonomic approaches to subjects.

6. The management will automatically, through induction, make new employees aware that they must take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their acts or omissions. Employees are to co-operate with the employer so to enable the company to comply with their statutory obligations and duties under the Health & Safety at Work Act.
